Thermal Oil Heater for CPO Storage Tank

Efficient Heating Solution for Crude Palm Oil

Thermal Oil Heater Storage Tank CPO
Thermal Oil Heater Storage Tank CPO

A Thermal Oil Heater (TOH) is one of the most effective heating systems for Crude Palm Oil (CPO) storage tanks. The system circulates high-temperature thermal oil through heating coils installed inside the storage tank, maintaining the CPO at the required temperature without direct contact between the heating medium and the product.

Unlike steam systems, a Thermal Oil Heater can provide temperatures up to 350°C while operating at relatively low pressure, resulting in safer operation, higher efficiency, lower maintenance, and stable temperature control.

Why Heating is Required for CPO Storage Tanks

Crude Palm Oil naturally becomes more viscous as its temperature decreases. If the temperature falls below approximately 45–50°C, the oil begins to solidify, making pumping and unloading difficult.

A Thermal Oil Heater maintains the CPO at an optimal storage temperature of:

ApplicationRecommended Temperature
CPO Storage Tank50–55°C
Pumping & Transfer55–60°C
Loading to Tank Truck55–60°C
Refinery Feed Tank60–70°C

Maintaining these temperatures helps:

  • Prevent CPO solidification
  • Reduce viscosity
  • Improve pumping efficiency
  • Minimize energy consumption
  • Maintain product quality
  • Prevent production downtime

Main Components of a Thermal Oil Heater System for CPO Storage Tanks

A Thermal Oil Heater system consists of several integrated components that work together to provide safe, efficient, and reliable heat transfer for Crude Palm Oil (CPO) storage tanks. The thermal oil circulates continuously through a closed-loop heating system, transferring heat from the heater to the heating coils inside the storage tank while maintaining precise temperature control.

1. Thermal Oil Heater

The primary heat source that raises the temperature of the heat transfer oil. It can be fired by natural gas, diesel, LPG, heavy oil, biomass, or electricity, depending on the application and available fuel.

2. Expansion Tank

Accommodates the thermal expansion of the heat transfer oil as its temperature increases. It also helps maintain system pressure and provides a reserve volume for safe operation.

3. Thermal Oil Circulation Pump

Continuously circulates the thermal oil through the closed-loop piping system, ensuring uniform heat distribution and stable operating temperatures throughout the storage tank.

4. Heating Coil (Carbon Steel or Stainless Steel)

Installed inside the CPO storage tank, the heating coil transfers thermal energy from the circulating thermal oil directly to the palm oil, maintaining the desired storage temperature and preventing solidification.

5. Temperature Controller

Automatically monitors and regulates the outlet oil temperature to maintain accurate process temperatures while improving energy efficiency.

6. Pressure Gauge

Displays the operating pressure of the thermal oil system, allowing operators to monitor system performance and detect abnormal conditions.

7. Flow Switch

Monitors the circulation flow of thermal oil. If the flow rate drops below the safe operating limit, the system can automatically shut down to protect the heater from overheating.

8. Safety Valve

Protects the system from excessive pressure by automatically relieving pressure when it exceeds the preset safety limit.

9. Control Panel

The central control unit that manages burner operation, circulation pumps, temperature control, alarms, safety interlocks, and overall system automation.

10. Thermal Oil Piping System

A network of insulated supply and return pipes that transports thermal oil between the heater and the CPO storage tank, minimizing heat loss and maximizing overall system efficiency.

Project Overview

A palm oil processing plant requires a heating system to maintain the temperature of 100 tons of Crude Palm Oil (CPO) stored in a storage tank. The objective is to keep the CPO at the ideal temperature for pumping and processing while minimizing energy consumption and maintenance costs.

ComponentSpecification
Thermal Oil Heater300,000 kcal/hr
Circulation Pump20–30 m³/hr
Expansion Tank8–10% of thermal oil volume
Heating CoilCarbon Steel ASTM A106 / Stainless Steel SS304
Operating Oil Temperature180–220°C
CPO Storage Temperature50–55°C

Operating Principle

  1. The Thermal Oil Heater heats the thermal oil to approximately 180–220°C.
  2. The circulation pump continuously delivers the hot oil to the heating coil installed inside the CPO storage tank.
  3. Heat is transferred through the coil walls to the CPO.
  4. As the CPO reaches 50–55°C, its viscosity decreases, allowing efficient pumping and transfer.
  5. The cooled thermal oil returns to the heater, where it is reheated, forming a continuous closed-loop circulation system.

Results

After installing a 300,000 kcal/hr Thermal Oil Heater, the palm oil facility achieved:

  • Stable CPO storage temperature between 50–55°C
  • Faster unloading and transfer operations
  • Lower pumping energy due to reduced oil viscosity
  • No steam losses or condensate recovery requirements
  • Lower maintenance compared with a conventional steam boiler
  • Improved overall thermal efficiency
  • Reduced fuel consumption through precise temperature control
