Definition of Asphalt Tank
An Asphalt Tank is a critical component of an Asphalt Mixing Plant (AMP) used to store and maintain hot liquid asphalt (bitumen) at the required operating temperature before it is mixed with aggregates. The tank receives hot asphalt from an Asphalt Kettle, Bitumen Decanter, or Bulk Bitumen Tanker, ensuring a continuous and reliable supply during asphalt production.
Inside the tank, a Heating Coil (Heating Pipe) circulates hot thermal oil supplied by a Thermal Oil Heater (Hot Oil Heater) or, in some applications, steam from a boiler. This indirect heating system keeps the asphalt at a stable temperature, prevents solidification, and maintains the proper viscosity for pumping and mixing.
To reduce heat loss and improve energy efficiency, the external surface of the asphalt tank is insulated with Rockwool or Glasswool, then covered with aluminum or galvanized sheet cladding. This insulation helps minimize fuel consumption while maintaining consistent asphalt temperature.
During plant operation, the heated asphalt is transferred from the storage tank to the Asphalt Weighing Scale or asphalt weighing hopper located on the Main Frame using an Asphalt Supply Pump, where it is accurately measured before entering the mixing process.
